Stroman reaches 2-year deal with Yankees

Right-hander Marcus Stroman, a free agent, and the Yankees have agreed to a two-year, $37 million deal that includes a vesting option for a third year, a source informed MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. In his Instagram Stories, Stroman also shared a picture of himself wearing a Yankees uniform.

The deal is pending a physical examination, which the club has not verified. According to a source who spoke Feinsand, Stroman will receive a $18 million player option for 2026 if he pitches 140 innings in 2025.

Stroman has previously been connected to the Yankees. 2019 saw interest in his services from New York before to the Trade Deadline. “I’m a New York kid from New York. That pretty much says it all,” Stroman stated at the time. “I adore throwing strikes at Yankee Stadium.” The world’s mecca is comparable to New York. The lineups of the Yankees are tough.

They can be challenging to traverse. The spotlight is my favorite. My preference was for the moment to be as grand as possible.”

Since making his Blue Jays debut in 2014, Stroman has spent the most of his career as a reliably above-average starter. Not one of the previous four seasons’ ERA+ values has been lower than 113. The previous season, in which he scored 113 runs, appeared to be a potential career year for the 32-year-old. Through his first 16 starts with the Cubs, he had a 2.28 ERA and a.536 opponents’ OPS, which helped him make his second All-Star team.

But Stroman’s 2023 campaign took a turn for the worse in July, giving up 27 earned runs in 26 2/3 innings before being sent on the injured list on August 2 due to discomfort in his right hip. A right rib cartilage injury postponed Stroman’s return to the mound, and after joining the Cubs on September 15, he finished the season with just eight innings pitched over four bullpen appearances. With a 3.95 ERA at the end, he had the second-highest of his career. you are reading about Marcus Stroman.

For the second consecutive season, Stroman’s innings total fell below 140 due to those injuries. He missed a month of 2022 because of discomfort in his right shoulder and missed more than two weeks because of a COVID-19 episode.

Stroman was one of baseball’s more resilient pitchers before that. In a four-season span from 2016 to 2019, he reached 180 innings three times. While playing for the Blue Jays in 2016 and 2017, he reached 200 innings. In the next season, he placed in the top 10 for the AL Cy Young and won a Gold Glove Award.

After being selected to his first All-Star Game in 2019, Stroman was dealt from the Blue Jays to the Mets, for whom he played until 2021. He had a torn left calf muscle before to the abbreviated season in 2020, which kept him out of action, and in August he opted out because to COVID-19 concerns.

Stroman has always relied on his low-90s sinker to restrict truly devastating contact and induce a lot of grounders despite his generally below-average strikeout rates. Throughout the first four years of his career, he had a ground-ball rate of above 60%, and it has never been below 50%. At 57%, he concluded 2023, his highest since 2018. you are reading about Marcus Stroman.

However, Stroman’s walk rate increased to a career-worst 9.0% last season while his chase rate (26.8%) and zone rate (45.8%) both declined sharply. With an 11.7% K-BB walk rate at the end of the season, he was rated 67th out of 87 pitchers who pitched at least 130 innings.

According to sources who spoke to ESPN on Thursday, right-hander Marcus Stroman and the Yankees have reached an agreement on a two-year, $37 million deal that includes a vesting player option. With Stroman, New York will have a two-time All-Star in their rotation.

After pitching for the Chicago Cubs in the first half of 2023 and recording a 2.96 ERA, which was the fourth-best NL mark, Stroman, 32, was added to the National League roster. After sustaining hip and rib injuries, he only made six starts (along with two relief appearances) in the second half. He gave up 23 earned runs in 24 innings, which dropped his season-long ERA to 3.95.

Nevertheless, the Yankees looked to him to support a rotation that included a few question marks and the current American League Cy Young winner, Gerrit Cole. Carlos Rodon, a left-hander, struggled in his debut season after signing a $162 million, six-year contract. Nestor Cortes (4.97 ERA in 63⅓ innings) and Clarke Schmidt (4.64 ERA in 159 innings) are anticipated to fill out the rotation.

According to sources, if Stroman achieves 140 innings in 2025, a third-year option for $18 million would become vested. He tossed 138.2 innings in 2022 and 136.^ innings the previous season, although he has already thrown more than 140 times. you are reading about Marcus Stroman.

The New York Post first reported that the Yankees turned to Stroman because they needed a starter to complement their winter signing of outfielder Juan Soto and found Blake Snell’s contract to be too expensive.

After starting his career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014, Stroman, a nine-year veteran, will be joining his fourth team in six seasons. He previously played for the Cubs for two years before choosing not to accept a $21 million salary for this season, spending 2019 to 2021 with the New York Mets.

With at least 1,000 innings pitched since his 2014 debut, Stroman has the second-highest ground ball rate (56.7%) among pitchers whose sinker is his most productive pitch. Born and raised in Long Island, Stroman has a career record of 77-76 with a 3.65 ERA after being selected by Toronto in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft.

Nick Saban retiring In a sport always in flux, Nick Saban’s standard never wavered

The world is talking about Nick Saban retiring. Nick Saban’s age is 72. In the year 1965, he started coaching football. Saying something like, “You know what? I’ll take that. His retirement in 2024 or 2034 won’t change his status as a legend. It is commendable that he is leaving after only eight appearances in the ten College Football Playoffs, suggesting that he is certainly still performing at a high level.

The shocking news of Saban’s departure as Alabama’s coach comes at a time when the sport is experiencing tremendous change. As a whole, college football is chaotic. Saban, the very definition of steadiness, is missing.

Nick Saban retiring

College sports naturally generate coaches with a large stature. Characters come and go. The staff remains. The programs are defined by them. A conference is defined by them. They supply the shows that air on television. They remain unchanged.

It was through that lens that Saban seemed like an alpha: unwavering, severe, disciplined, and demanding. It’s easy to dismiss him as traditional, but that’s unfair. He has a background and mindset that lean towards coaching defense, yet his offense on his most recent Alabama squad was off the charts.

Why? It would no longer be effective for Saban to employ the same winning strategies that worked when he was a player under Don James at Kent State, an early coach at Toledo, Bill Belichick’s defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns, or at Michigan State. This is because collegiate offenses started spreading the field. The best ones have strong concepts around which to build. But the best ones are also good at adjusting. Saban was the best of them.

It would be easy to assume that he is leaving because he is sick of dealing with the distractions that college football has become, given his retirement at this juncture when players’ likeness rights are worth millions and the transfer portal gives them virtual free agency Nick Saban retiring. Perhaps that is a contributing factor. Perhaps that’s the main cause. The question “Is this what we want college football to be?” came up in his recent remarks many times. Until he speaks, we will not know the complete explanation; and even then, he may just provide half of the answer.

He is certainly stepping down at a time when he may still be productive, whatever his motives. In 17 years with the Crimson Tide, he won 297 games. However, in the SEC championship game against Georgia, the reigning national champions, he lost his last 206 games. The Tide appeared to be in a position to win their CFP semi-final match against Michigan, but he was unsuccessful. One thing is evident after looking at either game: Saban is still a good coach.

Given that he is retiring at that time, it is difficult not to think about his former employer and friend, Bill Belichick. In terms of their demeanor, beliefs, work ethic, and sheer football nerdiness, they are quite similar to one another.

Belichick will turn 72 in April, yet Saban stands apart from him thanks to his decision: Saban came close, but never quite hit rock bottom. He never had a losing season in his 28 years of coaching at the collegiate level. Three of Belichick’s previous four teams have finished with losing records, including this season’s 4-13 disaster, so the New England Patriots are in a precarious position under his coaching. Based on Belichick’s recent record, one may argue that it reduces his legacy or that he deserves to be fired after 24 seasons.

In his last season as head coach, Saban went 12–2, winning the SEC Championship. His seven national championships were tainted by nothing, but he goes out on top, or at least very close.

Nick Saban

The American football coach Nicholas Lou Saban Jr. was born on October 31, 1951. For the years 2007–2023, he coached the Crimson Tide football team as head coach. Most people think he was the best college football coach ever.[15]Both of these sources Saban has coached at three different universities—LSU, MSU, and Toledo—in addition to his time as head coach of the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL).

In 2003, Saban guided the LSU Tigers to the BCS National Championship. From 2009 through 2012, the Alabama Crimson Tide won the BCS and AP national championships. In 2015, 2017, and 2020, they also won the College Football Playoff. He holds the record for most college football national championships won by a head coach with seven. Since the AP Poll’s establishment in 1936, he became the only college football coach to win a national title with two separate Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions. The year 19 The only two coaches in SEC history to win titles at two separate institutions are Saban and Bear Bryant. In, Saban has a 292-71-1 record in his collegiate coaching career.

The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inducted Saban in 2013. Five Alabama players have won the Heisman Trophy: Mark Ingram II (2009), Derrick Henry (2015), DeVonta Smith (2020), and Bryce Young (2021), all coached by Saban.

According to CelebrityNetWorth, Nick Saban has a net worth of $70 million. In 2013, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inducted the former head coach of the Crimson Tide. However, that is not his sole accomplishment.

Nick Saban announces retirement after unprecedented success at Alabama

After one of the most successful careers in college football history, Nick Saban, coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, announced his retirement on Wednesday night. Another first: the Crimson Tide haven’t had to replace their football coach since 2007.

“The University of Alabama has been a very special place to [wife] Terry and me,” Saban stated in a statement provided by the school. Throughout our 17 years as head coach at Alabama and as members of the Tuscaloosa community, we have cherished every moment. The legacy and the way we accomplished it are more important than the number of games we won or lost. We made every effort to do things correctly. As a program, our primary objective has always been to assist athletes in building lasting value, reaching their full athletic and personal potential, and achieving greater success in all aspects of life. We hope that’s the case, and that Alabama will always be our home.

In the case of Saban, where do I even begin? In 2003, while playing for LSU, he earned the first of seven national titles. There, he also won two SEC championships. The 72-year-old moved from being a prominent football coach to a true icon during his time at Alabama, which spanned all those years in Tuscaloosa. He was a 17-year Crimson Tide member and won the title five times: in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2020. From the beginning of the College Football Playoff era, until the Bowl Championship Series ended, his program was unrivaled.

Because of Saban, Alabama was certain. An automaton, he posed for the camera.

Nick Saban retiring after a remarkable career

The University of Alabama has been blessed to have Nick Saban as our football coach for the past 17 seasons. “Nick Saban is, simply put, one of the greatest coaches of all time, in any sport,” stated Greg Byrne, Alabama’s athletic director. His influence extends well beyond the football pitch; he exemplifies all three roles.

The real start came in 1973 when Saban joined as a graduate assistant after playing defensive back at Kent State. After taking over as head coach at Toledo in 1990, he stepped away after just one season to serve as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns for four years. From 1995 to 1999, he made a triumphant comeback to collegiate coaching at Michigan State.

Following Saban’s success at LSU, the Miami Dolphins hired him as their coach in 2005. That was for just two years before the position in Alabama became available. His 206–29 record at Alabama, which includes a 16–7 mark in bowl and playoff games, tells the tale. His final game was a loss to Michigan in the Rose Bowl on January 1st, and his career record is 297-71-1.

22

Coverage in the following days and weeks will honor Saban’s memory. The best place to start, though, is with his coaching pedigree and the extensive roster of NFL players he mentored. Saban had Kirby Smart on staff at LSU, the Dolphins, and Alabama; Smart is responsible for Georgia’s current domination. After hiring Steve Sarkisian as an offensive analyst in 2016, and then as his offensive coordinator in 2019, Saban added him to the list of coaches that includes Lane Kiffin, Mark Dantonio, Will Muschamp, Billy Napier, Mario Cristobal, Michael Locksley, and Mario Cristobal.

There just isn’t enough room to include every single NFL player. Nonetheless, among them are present-day greats like Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jaylen Waddle, Amari Cooper, DeVonta Smith, Calvin Ridley, Will Anderson Jr., Quinnen Williams, Jonathan Allen, Patrick Surtain II, Trevon Diggs, Marlon Humphrey, and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Mark Ingram (2009), Bryce Young (2021), Smith (2020), and Henry (2015) are the four Heisman Trophy winners that Saban has coached.

Saban appeared to have softened somewhat in recent years, even though he could be stern in public. He relaxed and continued making jokes at his December press conference after leading the Crimson Tide to their ninth SEC championship, a victory over Georgia. Ms. Terry, his wife, who is well-known in and around Tuscaloosa, sat close by, smiling and nodding in agreement.

Saban was not a fan of the NCAA’s decision to allow players to benefit from their NIL in 2021. A school that “bought every player on their team” was Texas A&M, he said once, expressing his frustration with the way some institutions functioned. The process of hiring would change forever. Every December would be transformed into a massive free agency thanks to NIL and the new transfer regulations Nick Saban retiring. Later on, though, Saban expressed regret for singling out A&M and apologized for his comments.

(Saban was an employee of Jimbo Fisher’s at LSU while he was A&M’s coach.) Nick Saban retiring As was customary under Saban, Alabama would quickly adjust to new circumstances and even shape those circumstances to suit its purposes.

Nick Saban retiring as Alabama coach, ending a truly remarkable’ career with 7 national titles

After 17 years at Alabama, where he won six national championships, Nick Saban announced his retirement on Wednesday night. Saban is generally regarded as the best college football coach of all time because of his record of leading legendary programs against the most formidable opposition.

The institution was described by Saban as “a very special place” to him and his wife in a statement released by the school. Saban went on to say that what truly mattered to him was not the win-loss record, but rather his legacy and the team’s path to continuous success.

“Our main objective has always been to support players in building their future worth, maximizing their potential as athletes, and improving their overall life outcomes through their participation in the program,” he stated. We will always consider Alabama our home, and hopefully, we have done that.

11

Saban surpassed Bear Bryant, another great from Alabama, as the coach with the most championships in 2020, and his seven national crowns (he had won one before at LSU) solidified a legacy characterized by achieving the sport’s highest peaks.

At the age of 72, Saban retires as the winningest active coach with 292 victories, good for seventh all-time. More than 80% of his games were victories, and he was named coach of the year 17 times—both nationally and in his conference. He also won 12 conference titles.

He guided the Crimson Tide to winning seasons annually beginning in 2008 and brought something no previous coach had done to Alabama: the Heisman Trophy. During his tenure, four players—including Bryce Young in 2021—were awarded the trophy.

After going 12-2 in 2023, Saban’s most recent Alabama squad lost 27-20 in overtime to eventual national champion Michigan in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl.

Saban coached the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League from 2005 to 2006 before joining Alabama in 2007. He also worked as a collegiate coach for LSU from 2000 to 2004, Michigan State from 1995 to 1999, and Toledo from 1990. While he was a college coach, he went 292-71-1 with five victories nullified due to players improperly receiving free textbooks from other students. With both LSU and Alabama, Saban won 11 SEC championships and went to the bowl every year. While at Alabama, he had a 16-7 bowl record.

In 2013, Saban became a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to his many honors, he has been named SEC Coach of the Year five times, Walter Camp Coach of the Year twice, AP College Football Coach of the Year twice, and the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award winner twice.

Saban was a quarterback in high school who switched to defensive back in college; he cherished his time with the Alabama defense. One of his less obvious strengths, though, was his ability to teach a variety of positions. The Crimson Tide has amassed 44 first-round NFL Draft choices since he took over in 2007, and that total will rise in the 2024 draft in April. With Young at quarterback, Mark Ingram II at running back in 2009 Derrick Henry at wide receiver in 2015, and Devonta Smith at wide receiver in 2020, Saban has coached 123 players to NFL rosters at Alabama.

No one has coached more Heisman Trophy winners than Saban.

Athlete Greg Byrne of Alabama ranked Saban among the all-time greats. “What a privilege it has been to witness one of the greatest to ever perform it,” Byrne said.

“He isn’t walking away from the game, knowing Nick,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey stated. He’s stepping down from a position. Nick will likely have opinions. I contacted his representative and expressed my want to speak with them. If he gets a call, I’d love to hear his opinions on the state of college football sometimes.

Saban inked his final agreement with the Crimson Tide in 2022. The arrangement was set to continue for eight years, until 2030, and was paid a total of $93.6 million.

Alabama, perhaps the most well-known college football brand in the United States, and Saban, the sport’s most prominent character, were the ideal match. His victory total and, maybe, his titles may be challenged by other coaches as the game goes on. However, the magnetic combination of Saban and Alabama may never be equaled. you are reading Nick Saban retiring.

Alabama football coach Nick Saban announces retirement

After 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa, legendary college football coach Nick Saban announced his retirement on Wednesday. Saban won seven national championships and helped transform Alabama into a national powerhouse, which he did by winning six of those titles.

“The University of Alabama has been a very special place to Terry and me,” Saban stated.

“Hopefully, we have done that, and we will always consider Alabama our home.”

The 72-year-old Saban just finished his 17th season coaching the Crimson Tide, and their Rose Bowl loss to Michigan was the last game in their championship run. His 201 victories were equal for second-most in SEC history for a single institution with Vince Dooley of Georgia; Bear Bryant had 232 victories in 25 seasons with Alabama.

Bryant led Alabama to unprecedented success, as the Crimson Tide won six national titles and thirteen SEC crowns. Saban brought the Crimson Tide back to their glory days when they won six further national titles and nine conference titles so now Nick Saban retiring.

“Nick Saban is one of the best coaches of all time, in any sport,” stated Greg Byrne, the athletic director at Alabama. Beyond the football field, his influence extends far and wide as a model coach, mentor, and leader. Although he was our coach for a little time, his impact will be remembered for a lifetime. It has been a privilege to watch one of the greatest performers ever do it from the front row.

Saban informed his players of his retirement plans during a 5 p.m. ET meeting on Wednesday, according to sources who spoke with ESPN’s Chris Low. This was in his insistence that they hear the news before it was announced publicly. After some players couldn’t make it due to weather, the scheduled Tuesday team meeting was delayed to Wednesday. Saban and Terry returned to Tuscaloosa on Monday after spending the holiday weekend at their Florida home.

For around fifteen minutes, Saban informed the staff and players in the team room of his retirement. After that, he informed them that Byrne wished to speak with them. Saban departed from the room as Byrne was speaking and continued to converse with his staff thereafter.

The statement by Saban came as a surprise to nearly everyone in the program, including the timing. Just one hour before he informed his players of his retirement, he was using Zoom to interview possible assistant coaches. After deciding to retire, he reportedly did not want to proceed with the interviews he had conducted on Tuesday with potential candidates. you are reading Nick Saban retiring.

Saban expressed his gratitude to his players for their enthusiastic buy-in and assured them that his choice had been deliberated. He informed his players that he was going to retire because of all the changes in college football, including the transfer portal, tampering, the use of NIL to hide bids for high school players and transfers, and the extension of the recruiting calendar.

According to Low’s sources, Saban’s frustration with “what college football had turned into” had been building up for some time. It appears like the only thing that matters today is who can get what in the NIL and who can get the largest deal, even though he’s all about team and developing players and building a team.

No college team Saban oversaw in his 28 years as head coach ever lost a game. His accomplishments include seven national crowns, twelve conference titles (eleven from the SEC and one from the MAC), and nineteen bowl victories. At Michigan State, he had his two worst seasons in 1996 and 1998, when he ended with a.500 record. you are reading Nick Saban retiring.

He played for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL for two years before going back to college football to bring a legendary program that hadn’t won a national championship in fifteen years back to life. With 201 victories in 17 years at the helm of the Crimson Tide, he outscored his predecessor Bryant (171) throughout the 24 years that followed Bryant’s departure and Saban’s appointment (171). you are reading Nick Saban retiring.

Regardless of division, Saban’s 292-71-1 record as a college football coach ranks him 12th all-time in NCAA history and sixth all-time in FBS history. In 1990, his only year coaching the Bulldogs, he guided them to a MAC title. Before becoming the first Michigan State coach to send his first three teams to bowl games and subsequently lead LSU to the 2003 national title, he spent four seasons as Bill Belichick’s defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns.

But it was at Alabama that he truly established himself as one of the all-time greats in college football coaching Nick Saban retiring.

Following a 7-6 start to Saban’s tenure in 2007, the Crimson Tide went on a 16-game winning run, the longest of any program in the annals of the AP poll (since 1936). Despite facing 14 more AP-ranked opponents (107 total) than any other program under Saban’s watch, this remains the case.

14 facts about cincinnati reds 1690126992

With a massive frontcourt, Cincinnati is among the top rebounding teams in the country, and they’re headed to Provo. Even though they lack a player with Branden Carlson’s level of talent and versatility, I see some parallels between them and Utah. Just like BYU, the Bearcats start two players who are 6 feet 11 inches tall. Aziz Bandago, who is 7 feet tall, might play if he gets over a back issue. Given that both teams depend significantly on offensive rebounds—the Bearcats at #7 and the Huskies at #1 in the nation—the rebounding duel is sure to be a deciding factor In the cincinnati vs byu prediction.

Let’s Look at the Data for byu vs cincinnati prediction

  • KenPom from BYU: 4
  • 2. BYU Net
  • No. 1 Victories: San Diego State (H), North Carolina State (N), and Arizona State (N)
  • Utah lost (away).
  • There are forty Cincinnati KenPoms.
  • The Cincinnati NET scored 37
  • Georgia Tech’s Victory (Home)
  • Xavier (A) and Dayton (N) are UC’s only losses against teams ranked in the top 100.
  • The KenPom forecast has BYU winning 84% of the time against UC’s 70%.
  • Attention: Cincinnati Players to Keep an Eye on
  • Forward/Center Victor Lahkin —On a per-game basis, the 6-foot-11, 240-pound big man is first on the Bearcats in scoring (13.6 points), rebounds (8.5), and blocks (1 block). This season, Lahkin has improved his three-point shooting from 11 in his previous two seasons to 10-33 (30%).

All Day Thomas, Guard—Thomas starts every game at point guard and is second on the team in scoring (11.4 ppg). The 6-footer is third on the squad in three-point attempts, but he shoots just 28% from beyond the arc despite his rim-touching abilities.

Forward/Guard Simas Lukosius —The Butler transfer visited Brigham Young University (BYU) on official business before committing to the Bearcats. At 42% from beyond the arc, Lukosius poses the greatest threat to the team’s 3-point defense if CJ Fredrick is unable to play (more on that in a bit). Lukosius is a long-range shooter who shows great creativity when given the ball.

Dan Skillings, 6. The Bearcats’ sixth man, the guard/forward, scores 11 points and pulls down 6.6 rebounds a game while playing the wing position. Skillings has a 28% success rate when shooting from deep and is at his best while within the arc.

Jameson Reynolds, in the middle —In Aziz’s absence or with restricted mobility, the 6-foot-11, 275-pound power forward will most likely start. The Bearcats’ inside attack is bolstered by Reynolds, who has only appeared in four games since being declared eligible.

injuries to observe

The center, Aziz Bandaogo —A 7-foot UVU transfer who was granted a waiver to play last month has only seen action in six games. He has been practicing this week despite sitting out Cincinnati’s previous game due to a back injury. The Bearcats get a top-tier rim protector and runner in Aziz if he can go.

Guard CJ FredrickThe ex-Kentucky and Iowa sniper is iffy as he heals from a hamstring injury. With a field goal percentage of 44% and an average of 7.5 points per game, Fredrick is among the nation’s top shooters.

Interest-Pickling Matchups and Predicaments

  • I anticipate that Fousseyni Traore will play in his first game since November 24 as he recovers from a hamstring/knee injury; but, I cannot confirm this until tomorrow, so it is far from certain. This will be BYU’s frontcourt vs Cincinnati’s. In the cincinnati vs byu prediction I would not be surprised if his minutes were between ten and twelve, and certainly not more than fifteen. With Bandaogo back on the court, UC’s large and skilled frontcourt could give BYU a run for its money. The return of Fouss would be beneficial, but the magnitude of UC would provide a challenge for BYU. On offense, I see BYU as having the most chance of a mismatch. Despite their great play in the post, UC’s three big men are vulnerable while playing on the perimeter. Noah Waterman and Aly Khalifa may have a major showdown here. Chasing Noah around the 3-point line and preventing cuts to the basket won’t be a strong suit for any of UC’s big men, in my opinion. With Aly Khalifa at the five-point arc, BYU can clear the paint and give Noah room to move around the court, something that UC may find difficult to do with two big men on the court. If UC has trouble protecting Waterman, I’d put the odds in BYU’s favor by ten or more.
  • As I hinted at before, offensive rebounding is a major component of both teams’ strategies, so this could be an interesting battle on the boards. Two of the following are must-dos for Cincinnati to pull off the upset: 3) Insist on turning the ball over, 2) Cut down on BYU’s offensive rebound rate, or 3) Keep BYU from making buckets. Considering that UC’s defensive turnover rate is 261st in the country, the first two points are likely to require their attention. When BYU continues to rack up the boards as they have throughout the season, their offensive firepower will allow them to capitalize and score. Cincinnati should be able to keep the game close if they can contain BYU on the offensive boards.

Outlook and Forecast

I have BYU winning for a lot of reasons, even though Cincinnati is a great team and could pull off the shock. Although Cincinnati’s frontline is among the best in the Big 12 when its guards are healthy and competent, I’m not as impressed by their defense as I am by other Big 12 teams. The following players were a major factor in BYU’s struggles in their three most intense games this year: 1) Guards that can put you under strain and make you give up.

UC failed miserably in this regard; in my opinion, this was one area where NC State and SDSU excelled. 2) A talented big guy who can split time between the paint and the perimeter, as well as play high-low alongside another big. This was a problem for Utah’s front line and Branden Carlson, but Cincinnati lacks a big man with Carlson’s skill set on the perimeter.

The battle should be tight, with UC getting their share of paint points and boards. However, I worry that BYU will be able to exploit UC’s defensive vulnerabilities while facing their two bigs since the Cougars lack the guards to match the athleticism of other league teams. With Fouss’s 10-15 minutes, BYU shouldn’t be able to be intimidated by UC’s massive frontline and should have more opportunities to capitalize than UC. Despite UC’s struggles in their last two away games, the Marriott Centre is sure to be rocking for this one.

The score will be BYU84, Cincinnati 72.

Imran Khan the former prime minister of Pakistan is the most popular personality around the globe these days. Everyone is talking curiously and proudly about the great Imran Khan. As the goons are trying to suppress the great leader he is becoming the apple of the eye of every Pakistani. Recently an article was published in “The Economist” and the unexpected popularity of this article is proof of his following.

Massive shifts have occurred in Pakistan’s political landscape within the past two years. Without a doubt, the most remarkable shift has been the extraordinary rise of a populist movement behind Imran Khan and his party, which had been steadily losing support.

Imran khan

Imran Khan’s disqualification by the no-confidence movement set the stage for the drama. Khan denied any involvement and accused the movement of being a foreign plot.

The rallying cry for the PTI brand and a sea change in the domestic political landscape came on March 27, during Imran Khan’s address at the Parade Ground Islamabad, when he allegedly waved a letter in the air and claimed it proved the “American intervention” behind his ouster. The PTI’s PR staff expertly shifted public support for Imran Khan by using a standard internal diplomatic cable as a promotional weapon. There is no better example in the marketing of how to build a stronger brand and improve its “positioning” on a seemingly little point or feature by using an effective communication approach to make it seem larger than it is.

Imran Khan emerged as a beacon of hope for the Pakistani people, who had grown weary of the political class’s treatment of them as property since 1945. People supported Imran Khan because his reputation was unmistakable and they had unwavering faith in him.

The “London plan” was Imran Khan’s claim to fame; he had long held the belief that Nawaz Sharif’s ascension to power was the ultimate goal of any regime change effort. Even while these kinds of illegal acts have occurred in the past, the rise of social media has made them far more visible.

The disastrous regime change operation:

Between April 3, 2022, and April 10, 2022, a political and constitutional crisis erupted in Pakistan. During a session where the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan was supposed to be voted on, Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri dismissed it, claiming that the involvement of a foreign country in the regime change violated Article 5 of Pakistan’s constitution. Khan then went on television to announce that he had that President Arif Alvi dissolve the National Assembly.

Under Article 58 of the constitution, Alvi followed Khan’s recommendation. A constitutional crisis ensued as a consequence of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) acting on its initiative to address the continuing problem, with Imran Khan essentially leading a constitutional coup. After four days, the SCP voted 5-0 to reverse the dismissal of the no-confidence motion, prorogation of the National Assembly, Imran Khan’s recommendation to President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly, and the dissolution of the National Assembly itself, ruling that they were all unconstitutional.

124098604 khan.png

Also, the Supreme Court ruled that the National Assembly wasn’t prorogued and that the speaker needed to call a new session of the legislature back to order at 10:30 a.m. sharp. April 9, 2022. The National Assembly met again on April 9, but they delayed putting the issue to a vote. Voting did not start, but the session continued all day. The speaker and deputy speaker both tendered their resignations just before midnight.

The National Assembly decided to remove Khan from office just after midnight on 10 April. He became the first prime minister in Pakistan to be removed from office through a no-confidence resolution. The motion was approved with 174 votes, a majority. In Pakistan’s 75-year history, the country’s strong military has staged several coups, making it such that no prime minister has ever finished his tenure.

The 9th May operation:

May 9 was an effort to destabilize Imran Khan and his party, the PTI. The riots of May 9, also known as the 9/5 riots, were a string of violent occurrences that occurred in Pakistan on May 9, 2023. Demonstrations by PTI supporters became violent rioting when the Islamabad High Court reasons detained Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chief Imran Khan. The rapidly escalating violence and subsequent involvement of law enforcement caused substantial damage to various government and military installations.

A mobile internet blockage and a crackdown on PTI officials, workers, followers, and those in the media and legal community who were seen as linked to the party’s cause were the government’s responses. The country’s highest court is currently hearing a lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of military courts, which have begun to trial civilians. According to PTI, the events of May 9th were orchestrated by the Pakistani establishment as a false flag operation to destabilize PTI and implicate Imran Khan.

Background

The PTI leader and Pakistani politician Imran Khan was arrested on May 9, 2023. The administration, headed by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, said that they had evidence implicating Khan and held him responsible for orchestrating the attacks. Numerous towns, such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan, saw protests by PTI supporters over Khan’s arrest.

Unrest and Bloodshed

Violence broke out during the protests organized by the PTI, leading to widespread destruction. Protesters attacked government and military installations, set fires, and vandalized property. At least five PTI workers were murdered by police using live bullets; one fatality occurred in Quetta and the other four in Peshawar. Numerous charges were launched against individuals involved in the disturbances, which were fueled by anti-terrorism legislation.

Official reaction

As tensions rose in the wake of the May 9 riots, the Punjab Home Department formed 53 police-led Joint Investigation Teams (JITs) to probe the many reported incidents in depth. The Punjab cabinet panel on law and order gave its assent for the creation of multiple JITs. To aid with their investigations, the prosecution department assigned a prosecutor to each JIT.

Proceedings and Arrests

The Punjab Police have stated that over a thousand individuals have been apprehended in the riots that occurred on May 9 in Lahore specifically. There were 5,615 people arrested in Punjab on suspicion of rioting, according to sources. The majority of the many incidents that were reported to the authorities fell under the purview of anti-terrorism laws. There was a wide range of recorded cases in each city, although Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan were the worst hit.

Crackdown against the PTI

The riots on May 9 had a major influence on Pakistan’s political atmosphere as a whole. Rights groups have expressed concerns about arbitrary arrests, custodial abuse, and forced disappearances following the crackdown on PTI officials and workers, which resulted in the imprisonment of hundreds. At televised news conferences, PTI leaders were compelled to resign from their posts inside the party.

The PTI leaders’ businesses were sealed because they refused to leave the party. The police and military intelligence forces harassed family members of PTI officials who went into hiding. Punjab Police confiscated the dowry for Mian Aslam Iqbal’s daughter’s wedding, attacked and looted several of their residences in the middle of the night, and destroyed the homes of Lal Chand Malhi and Ali Nawaz Awan. Khadija Shah, a businesswoman and granddaughter of former Pakistani Army Chief Asif Nawaz Janjua, was the most notable of the loud female supporters of Khan’s party, and a crackdown on them was also launched.

Ever since the riots ended, several individuals have been taken into custody, including former federal ministers Shehryar Khan Afridi and Ali Muhammad Khan, as well as former governor of Punjab Omer Sarfraz Cheema and provincial ministers of Punjab Yasmin Rashid and Mehmood-ur-Rasheed. Afridi and Rashid were each re-arrested twice, while Khan was re-arrested six times, even after being freed by the courts. Just as Cheema’s wife was about to attend her husband’s hearing, she was detained. Even though he was housed in a “death cell” specifically for people on death row, Afridi was denied the opportunity to attend his brother’s burial and endured terrible circumstances.

Press Suppression and the Kidnapping of Journalists

On May 9th, when rioting swept the nation, mobile internet connectivity was temporarily cut off. The ban had a significant impact on gig workers, freelancers, and remote workers who relied on mobile internet. According to estimates, Pakistan’s telecom companies lost 2.49 billion (US$8.6 million) during the three days that mobile internet was suspended, and the country’s software export industry lost 10 billion (US$35 million). On May 13, 2023, the whole nation’s internet connectivity was restored. As it called for the restoration of internet services in the country, GSMA criticized the suspension.

In the wake of the riots, access to social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube was also curbed. The Pakistan Telecom Authority put the restrictions in place after receiving a notification for them from the interior ministry, which was headed by Rana Sanaullah. By May 16, 2023, all social media access had been restored. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had previously said that “the script of the May 9 violence was prepared via social media,” suggesting that the government may implement another social media blockade.

Several prominent Pakistani media outlets were summoned to a clandestine meeting by the Pakistani military, wherein they were ordered to censor any mention of Imran Khan. As a consequence, the name of Khan vanished from all local print and electronic media overnight, and journalists began to euphemistically refer to him as “Qasim ke Abba” (Qasim’s father), a term that quickly became a trending topic on Twitter in Pakistan.

Imran Riaz Khan, a prominent Pakistani social media journalist, was abducted from outside Sialkot Central Jail on 11 May 2023 after being initially detained by Punjab Police. Usman Anwar, chief of Punjab Police, has blamed military agencies for Riaz’s disappearance and expressed his inability to find him in front of the Lahore High Court. Sami Ibrahim, head of Bol News, was also abducted from Islamabad on 24 May 2023 and released on 30 May 2023. Reporters Without Borders and the International Federation of Journalists have expressed concern over the kidnappings.

Military Trials of Non-Military Personnel

Following this, the government sought to transfer multiple cases to military courts for trial, citing the gravity of the crimes perpetrated during the May 9 riots. An anti-terrorism court in Faisalabad approved the transfer of four defendants involved in targeting defense sites, while an ATC in Rawalpindi approved the transfer of eight defendants involved in the attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ). The commanding officer also received 16 suspects, including an ex-PTI Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) who was charged with looting and vandalizing Corp Commander House in Lahore.

Later, trials of as many as 102 defendants, who were deemed to be involved in attacks on military installations, were transferred from anti-terrorism courts to military courts. The movie drew widespread criticism as military courts have been deemed as opaque systems shrouded in secrecy with little regard for human rights and legal due process by both the United Nations and the International Commission of Jurists.

Several constitutional petitions were made before the Supreme Court of Pakistan to declare the trials unconstitutional, including by the former Chief Justice of Pakistan, Jawwad S. Khawaja, who deemed it a “militarization of justice”. Pakistan People’s Party leader and prominent lawyer, Aitzaz Ahsan, was also one of the petitioners as he considered the move “a complete anathema to the constitutional separation of powers, the independence of the judiciary, the inalienable right of every Pakistani to be treated by the law, and the fundamental rights of life, liberty, fair trial, and due process”.

Imran Khan also filed a civil petition separately. These petitions are now part of a bigger Supreme Court bench consisting of six members, and the matter is being heard in military courts.

Lawyers Being Persecuted

Also hit hard were members of the legal community, especially those who were calling for the protection of Pakistan’s constitution and an end to the use of military courts to try civilians. Uzair Bhandari, a famous lawyer, was kidnapped and then freed from Imran Khan’s house after they discussed military courts. After criticizing the Punjab interim administration and the use of military tribunals to try civilians, armed men stormed the home of former governor Advocate Latif Khosa.

Imran Khan’s ideological politics:

To state it frankly, the people now view Imran Khan as a popular leader. Given the recent developments in Pakistan, his popularity has been steadily rising. He is now deeply embedded in the hearts and minds of Pakistanis.

Let’s have a look at the qualities that Pakistani most famous leader has:

Being religious:

Picture1 1

The fundamental goal of the Pakistani people is to maintain a strong religious foundation. During the daily routine of Namaz (Prayers), it is common for people to pray for leaders similar to Hazrat Umer (RA), a companion of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) who was renowned for his exceptional leadership during that time. This measures the level of religious observance in Pakistan. Additionally, Hazrat Umer (RA) was renowned for a prosperous period for minority groups.

As is fitting for Islam, a religion that preaches peace, non-Muslims were granted full protection throughout that time. Moving on to the point, Imran possesses every quality necessary for leadership within the Muslim community. There was a profound impression on people’s hearts from his renowned speech at the United Nations, in which he attempted to convince non-Muslims not to stereotype Muslims’ history and significant symbols, and in which he also made it clear that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lives in their hearts and that any action against Him would hurt them deeply, leading Muslims to take to the streets in protest.

Muslims were greatly moved by his defense of Islam on this majestic platform. The religious observances have also been observed by him.

In the face of overwhelming opposition

The Pakistani people also want their leader to have the guts to stand up for what they believe in. The truth is that political leaders frequently flee in confusion when confronted with mafias, leaving the populace in shambles. During election seasons, politicians make grand promises to the voters, but they fail to deliver.

There are encouraging signs that Imran Khan is making progress in this area. Going abroad would have been easier, and he has been offered that opportunity many; but, he has chosen to remain here and deal with all the false accusations. This was formerly absent from political party leadership. For example, the Muslim League’s Nawaz Sharif ran away from the country to avoid prosecution, which he left behind a devastated nation. Similarly, Imran Khan was the target of an assassination plot, but he thankfully did not back down. These characteristics have deeply affected the people of Pakistan.

Put an end to political dynasties

Picture3

For a long time, dynasty politics has cast a shadow over Pakistan. Under this political system, the average citizen had very little possibility of becoming a prominent executive, such as the prime minister. At some point in the future, the people would witness the leaders’ offspring. This style of politics finally caught people’s goats. They finally achieved their long-sought goal thanks to Imran Khan’s political approach. Youth make up the bulk of Imran Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). For a long time, the youth of our nation have sought a way to have a say in national policymaking. In Imran Khan, all kinds of people have found their answer.

Aspirations for low-income communities

Picture4 1

At the national level, Pakistan favors the wealthy and powerful. Most of the time, the wealthy and powerful get the subsidies. Shortness keeps the downtrodden at arm’s length. Imran Khan stands out because, right from the start, he prioritized helping the underprivileged. While serving in government, he oversaw the construction of affordable housing projects.

He started talking to individuals face-to-face, which was a change from before. People were finally able to finish the long-stalled work thanks to his legendary telethon. In one of the calls, sober ladies begged the government to help them recover their hard-won plots from the clutches of the mafia, and the response was swift: the security forces were ordered to crack down hard on the mafia. For citizens living under a dysfunctional state system where the court has abandoned its responsibility, these were some welcome reliefs.

Introduction:

The term “automotive industry” refers to the businesses and processes that go into making cars and trucks, including the majority of parts like engines and bodywork, but not gasoline, tyres, or batteries. Passenger cars and light trucks, such as SUVs, vans, and pickups, make up the bulk of the industry’s output. Delivery trucks and big transport trucks, sometimes known as semis, are commercial vehicles, however they play a supporting role in the business. The articles automobile, truck, bus, and motorbike cover the design of contemporary automotive vehicles, while petrol engine and diesel engine explain automotive engines. Transportation, History of: The Ascent of the Automobile details the evolution of the vehicle.

The impact that the automotive industry had on the twentieth century makes its relatively short history all the more intriguing. Even though the car wasn’t invented in America but rather in Europe in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the United States had total control over the industry for the first half of the twentieth century because to its innovation of mass manufacturing techniques. The scenario changed dramatically in the second part of the century when western European nations and Japan became as important exporters and producers.

Background:

The invention of the petrol engine in the 1860s and ’70s, primarily in Germany and France, laid the groundwork for the automobile industry, even if steam-powered road vehicles had been manufactured earlier. Manufacturers from the United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States joined their French and German counterparts around the turn of the twentieth century.

Events leading up to the First World War

There were hundreds of little firms that created a few hand-built automobiles in the early days of the automotive industry, and almost all of them went out of business very quickly. There were commonalities among the few number that made it into the age of mass manufacture.

To begin, there were three clearly defined groups: those who made bicycles (like the Germans and the British at Morris), those who made horse-drawn vehicles (like the Americans at Durant and Studebaker), and, most often, those who made equipment. Daimler, Lanchester, and Olds were the manufacturers of stationary gas engines; Vauxhall, of marine engines; Land, of machine tools; Woolseley, of sheep-shearing machinery; Peerless, of washing machines; White, of sewing machines; and Panhard and Levassor, of France, of woodworking and milling machinery.

Buick manufactured plumbing fittings, such as the first enamelled cast-iron bathtub, whereas Pierce manufactured birdcages. The United States’ Ford and the United Kingdom’s Rolls-Royce were two prominent outliers to this trend; they were both established as automobile manufacturers by partners with complementary commercial and engineering backgrounds.

Almost every manufacturer in the US was an assembler, meaning they took parts made by other companies and put them together. The assembly process was also well-suited to a beneficial finance strategy. The concept of buying components on credit and selling completed automobiles for cash allowed for the production of motor vehicles to begin with a small commitment of capital; since then, the sale of motor vehicles in the United States has revolved around the cash transaction between manufacturer and dealer. During this time, European automakers were more likely to produce all of their own parts.

The pioneering automaker had to make a fundamental decision about what to create in addition to resolving the technical and financial issues of entering production. Many people started experimenting with steam and electricity when the petrol engine became successful. The electric car really had the most popularity for a while due to its simplicity and lack of noise, but the constraints of battery capacity eventually killed it in the marketplace. Electric automobiles were still in restricted manufacture even into the 1920s, despite their immense popularity among women. Even as late as 1929, one of the most persistent manufacturers, Detroit Electric Car Company, continued regular operations.

The widespread use of the so-called flash boiler, which allowed for the quick raising of steam, after 1900, benefited steam power, a more formidable competitor. Since it did not need a complex gearbox, the steam automobile was simple to run. However, in order to make the engine lightweight enough for use in a road vehicle, high steam pressures were necessary; building and maintaining engines that met these criteria was costly and arduous. Petrol engines had mostly replaced steam engines by 1910. On the other hand, American brothers Stanley kept making steam cars all the way until the 1920s.

There were patent disputes in the early years of the automobile business, as there are with any new invention. Notable among these were two protracted legal battles in the US and UK, when promoters filed extensive patents in an effort to corner the market on the emerging sector. After five years of waiting for a patent, the claim was finally denied by British courts in 1901. Ford was embroiled in a legal dispute with the Association of Licenced Automobile Manufacturers in the US on the Selden patent.

The latter group asserted that the patent covered the essentials of gasoline-powered cars. The patent was deemed “valid but not infringed” by Ford in 1911, according to the courts. The primary outcome of the ruling was the establishment of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers’ forerunner in 1915 to oversee a patent cross-licensing arrangement.

Big production

The advent of full-scale mass production—a process that combines accuracy, standardization, interchangeability, synchronisation, and continuity—was the automobile industry’s most notable contribution to technical improvement. America was the first to implement mass manufacturing. After some preliminary investigation in the nineteenth century, the method found its natural home in the United States due to its vast population, high level of living, and great distances.

The popular portrayal of standardisation and interchangeability as “the American system of manufacture” placed American efforts front and center, even though Europe had participated in the experiments as well. The basic techniques were known, but they had never been used to produce a mechanism as complicated as a motor vehicle before (refer to work, history of the organisation of).

In 1908, at the British Royal Automobile Club in London, the “American system” of parts interchangeability was dramatically shown: three Cadillacs were taken apart, mixed, and 89 parts were taken out at random and replaced from the dealer’s stock; the cars were then put back together and driven 800 km (500 miles) without any problems.Cadillac Motor Car Company founder Henry M. Leland, who was also responsible for this display of showmanship, later collaborated with renowned electrical engineer Charles F. Kettering to create the electric starter, a game-changing invention that helped popularise gasoline-powered cars.

During WWII, the automobile industry

The manufacturing prowess of the automobile industry initially proved its worth to the war effort during World War I. Transport and supply were both facilitated by the widespread use of motor vehicles. Furthermore, factories that produce automobiles might easily be adapted to produce tanks and aeroplanes. The American industry, which was only active for a brief period, never made full use of its capability, and the conversion of automotive plants was an afterthought for all the combatants, an unplanned measure done after hostilities began.

When WWII loomed on the horizon, the automobile companies ramped up their preparations to pool their resources. Using administrative and technical staff from the automobile sector, the British government established “shadow factories” next to its automotive facilities. These factories were prepared to transition into military manufacture, namely aircraft, in the event of war. Late and ineffectively, France tried to convert. Full conversion of the German automobile industry to military manufacture did not occur until 1943.

This industry produced the military vehicles required for blitzkrieg. Prior to 1940, the United States made almost no attempt to prepare for industrial mobilisation. In fact, restrictions on civilian vehicle manufacture were not even considered until after the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbour. However, once its resources were directed into war manufacturing, the American automobile industry made a remarkable contribution due to the concentration of its productive capacity and expertise.

The automobile industry produced about $29 billion worth of war goods from 1940 to 1945, accounting for one-fifth of the nation’s total production. The number of vehicles produced went much beyond only trucks and Jeeps; the list includes 2,600,000 military trucks and 660,000 of them. A large portion of the U.S. military hardware, including machine guns, carbines, tanks, armoured cars, and helmets and aerial bombs, came from automotive companies.

It turned out to be more difficult than expected to adapt automotive plants for aircraft manufacture. It was not easy to modify an automotive engine factory to make them suitable for airframes, and neither were automobile assembly factories. Automobile manufacturers made substantial contributions to aeroplane manufacturing after these issues were overcome.

With the world’s second-largest automotive sector at its disposal, Britain was better able to put its resources to use. Austin, Morris, Standard, Daimler, Ford, and Rootes were among the companies that helped meet the wartime demand for aircraft and aviation engines by their participation in the shadow factories. Tanks were manufactured by Vauxhall and Leyland Motors.By utilising Morris Motors’ sales and service organisation, Lord Nuffield established a system for repairing aircraft, which was later expanded to other minor contractors, making a substantial contribution to the manufacturing effort.

While the United States and Britain had relatively large automobile industries, the other belligerents had far larger facilities for the manufacturing of weaponry. As a result, satisfying the ravenous demand for automobiles became the primary focus of the automotive manufacturers in these nations. This is how the numerous Ford properties that were seized by the Germans were put to use, as well as Volkswagen, which produced the jeep in Germany. Having been in the tank manufacturing business since WWI, Renault first supplied tanks to Germany and then France.

After 1945, the car industry

The manufacture of motor vehicles had a remarkable surge following World War II. The global production expanded by a factor of nearly ten during the course of 35 years. One notable aspect of this growth is that the majority of it happened in countries other than the US. The United States’ proportion of global automobile production decreased from around 80% to 20% even while output was going up.

The US was the world’s top producer right up until the recession hit in the ’80s. Japan, which had minimal car production before to the war, surpassed the European Economic Community (EEC) as the top producer in 1980. In 1994, the United States took back the lead in car manufacturing again. This was because, in response to political and economic constraints in their key foreign markets, Japanese automakers were increasing output at plants in the United States and other countries. Having said that, China surpassed all other automakers in terms of production in the early 2000s.

Forecasts indicate that the global automobile manufacturing market would expand from its 2021 valuation of around 2.86 trillion USD to a further 2.95 trillion USD in 2022, reflecting a gradual upturn but still falling short of the industry’s 2019 market size.

Markets are being shaken by automation and electrification

The next ten years will see massive advancements in automotive technology. By 2030, electric vehicles will account for around 26% of all new car sales, and the world’s fleet will include about 58 million self-driving cars.

Potentially new opportunities for suppliers

Electronic components, especially automotive semiconductors, will become even more important for automotive manufacturing as autonomous and electric vehicles dominate the market. Technological advancements are already impacting the types of parts needed to complete the finished product, which is leading to further segmentation in the auto supplier industry, especially within the automotive electronics industry.

Global manufacturing of motor vehicles from 2000 to 2022

With 85 million motor vehicles manufactured globally in 2022, an increase of almost six percent from the previous year, the top three countries producing automobiles and commercial vehicles were China, Japan, and Germany.

The manufacturing is led by China.

China has become one of the most important growth markets for global automakers in recent decades, and the country is now the largest producer of passenger cars in the world, with over 21 million cars produced in 2021 and nearly a third of the world’s total.

Shanghai General Motors Company Ltd, also known as Shanghai GM, is one of China’s leading automakers and a joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor Corporation Limited. GM makes and sells passenger vehicles under the Chevrolet and Cadillac brands, among others. In addition to cars, the company also makes engines and gearbox systems. In 2021, Shanghai GM produced just over 1.3 million units.

Prospects for 2020

In 2020, sales of motor vehicles plummeted. Across the board, sales dropped in the first half of the year due to countries implementing COVID-19 lockdown measures. Despite rising demand for plug-in electric vehicles and sales in China, the biggest automotive market in the world, these factors were not enough to compensate for the overall slump. As economies gradually recovered, production facilities sat idle for a while due to supply chain bottlenecks.

Demand in China is evolving

Sales of new passenger vehicles have been boosted by China’s burgeoning middle class as a result of the country’s rapid economic expansion. However, this growth in sales cannot be sustained indefinitely. Chinese consumers have recently shown a shift in their preference for motors, with electric vehicles, luxury cars, and SUVs seeing the most growth. In contrast, internal combustion engines are perceived as being outdated. China is currently the world’s largest market for electric vehicles and is expected to maintain this position for the next decade.
