Monday is the date set by the Islamabad High Court for the hearing of Khawar Mneka’s appeal in relation to the acquittals of Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Bushra Biibi (wife of Imran), as well as the PTI leader Imran Khan. Express News reported that Justice Azam Khan will preside the hearing. He was recently appointed to the Islamabad High Court.
Maneka challenged the 13 July 2024 decision of an additional session judge, in which the couple was acquitted. The appeal seeks to annul the verdict of the lower court.
The additional sessions judge acquitted Imran and Bushra Bibi of all charges relating to their marriage during Bushra’s iddat, which is a waiting period prescribed under Islamic law following a divorce or death.
Imran Khan, Bushra Biibi and the District and Sessions Court in Islamabad were acquitted in this case after the court reversed the seven-year sentence.
Salman Akram Raja appeared at the hearing on behalf of Imran Khan while Usman Riaz Gul represented Bushra Biibi. Both lawyers cross-examined four prosecution witnesses: Maneka and Awn Chaudhry as well as Mufti Saeed (the Nikah Khwan, or marriage officiant).
