Cincinnati vs BYU prediction, odds, pick, how to watch

When two Big 12 Conference teams meet, the odds favor the BYU by a wide margin. Despite being a Big 12 conference game, this one seems more like a nonconference matchup between BYU vs Cincinnati because both schools are new to the league. Provo will be electric for this showdown because it is the start of a new era.

Cincinnati vs BYU prediction

Above, we said that BYU is a heavy favorite. You can see that the Cougars are a heavy favorite in the odds right before kickoff by looking at them below. However, you’ll see that Cincinnati’s record is 11-2 for the year, which is only one game worse than BYU’s 12-1 record. Why are the Cougars being given such a large point spread against a team that has won so few games? You can tell that BYU’s schedule is far more challenging than Cincinnati’s just by looking at it.

Xavier and Dayton were Cincinnati’s two toughest opponents, and they both lost. Aside from a road loss to Utah, BYU has a winning record against North Carolina State, Arizona State, San Diego State (the national runner-up from last season), Fresno State, and Wyoming. Utah State has defeated teams from the Mountain West, the NCAA Tournament, and even a couple of bubble teams. Playing the Cougars on the road at the Marriott Centre, Cincinnati isn’t quite as well-known as BYU. In this exciting matchup in early January, the Bearcats face a formidable opponent.

With a massive frontcourt, Cincinnati is among the top rebounding teams in the country, and they’re headed to Provo. Even though they lack a player with Branden Carlson’s level of talent and versatility, I see some parallels between them and Utah. Just like BYU, the Bearcats start two players who are 6 feet 11 inches tall. Aziz Bandago, who is 7 feet tall, might play if he gets over a back issue. Given that both teams depend significantly on offensive rebounds—the Bearcats at #7 and the Huskies at #1 in the nation—the rebounding duel is sure to be a deciding factor In the cincinnati vs byu prediction.

Let’s Look at the Data for byu vs cincinnati prediction

  • KenPom from BYU: 4
  • 2. BYU Net
  • No. 1 Victories: San Diego State (H), North Carolina State (N), and Arizona State (N)
  • Utah lost (away).
  • There are forty Cincinnati KenPoms.
  • The Cincinnati NET scored 37
  • Georgia Tech’s Victory (Home)
  • Xavier (A) and Dayton (N) are UC’s only losses against teams ranked in the top 100.
  • The KenPom forecast has BYU winning 84% of the time against UC’s 70%.
  • Attention: Cincinnati Players to Keep an Eye on
  • Forward/Center Victor Lahkin —On a per-game basis, the 6-foot-11, 240-pound big man is first on the Bearcats in scoring (13.6 points), rebounds (8.5), and blocks (1 block). This season, Lahkin has improved his three-point shooting from 11 in his previous two seasons to 10-33 (30%).

All Day Thomas, Guard—Thomas starts every game at point guard and is second on the team in scoring (11.4 ppg). The 6-footer is third on the squad in three-point attempts, but he shoots just 28% from beyond the arc despite his rim-touching abilities.

Forward/Guard Simas Lukosius —The Butler transfer visited Brigham Young University (BYU) on official business before committing to the Bearcats. At 42% from beyond the arc, Lukosius poses the greatest threat to the team’s 3-point defense if CJ Fredrick is unable to play (more on that in a bit). Lukosius is a long-range shooter who shows great creativity when given the ball.

Dan Skillings, 6. The Bearcats’ sixth man, the guard/forward, scores 11 points and pulls down 6.6 rebounds a game while playing the wing position. Skillings has a 28% success rate when shooting from deep and is at his best while within the arc.

Jameson Reynolds, in the middle —In Aziz’s absence or with restricted mobility, the 6-foot-11, 275-pound power forward will most likely start. The Bearcats’ inside attack is bolstered by Reynolds, who has only appeared in four games since being declared eligible.

injuries to observe

The center, Aziz Bandaogo —A 7-foot UVU transfer who was granted a waiver to play last month has only seen action in six games. He has been practicing this week despite sitting out Cincinnati’s previous game due to a back injury. The Bearcats get a top-tier rim protector and runner in Aziz if he can go.

Guard CJ FredrickThe ex-Kentucky and Iowa sniper is iffy as he heals from a hamstring injury. With a field goal percentage of 44% and an average of 7.5 points per game, Fredrick is among the nation’s top shooters.

Interest-Pickling Matchups and Predicaments

  • I anticipate that Fousseyni Traore will play in his first game since November 24 as he recovers from a hamstring/knee injury; but, I cannot confirm this until tomorrow, so it is far from certain. This will be BYU’s frontcourt vs Cincinnati’s. In the cincinnati vs byu prediction I would not be surprised if his minutes were between ten and twelve, and certainly not more than fifteen. With Bandaogo back on the court, UC’s large and skilled frontcourt could give BYU a run for its money. The return of Fouss would be beneficial, but the magnitude of UC would provide a challenge for BYU. On offense, I see BYU as having the most chance of a mismatch. Despite their great play in the post, UC’s three big men are vulnerable while playing on the perimeter. Noah Waterman and Aly Khalifa may have a major showdown here. Chasing Noah around the 3-point line and preventing cuts to the basket won’t be a strong suit for any of UC’s big men, in my opinion. With Aly Khalifa at the five-point arc, BYU can clear the paint and give Noah room to move around the court, something that UC may find difficult to do with two big men on the court. If UC has trouble protecting Waterman, I’d put the odds in BYU’s favor by ten or more.
  • As I hinted at before, offensive rebounding is a major component of both teams’ strategies, so this could be an interesting battle on the boards. Two of the following are must-dos for Cincinnati to pull off the upset: 3) Insist on turning the ball over, 2) Cut down on BYU’s offensive rebound rate, or 3) Keep BYU from making buckets. Considering that UC’s defensive turnover rate is 261st in the country, the first two points are likely to require their attention. When BYU continues to rack up the boards as they have throughout the season, their offensive firepower will allow them to capitalize and score. Cincinnati should be able to keep the game close if they can contain BYU on the offensive boards.

Outlook and Forecast

I have BYU winning for a lot of reasons, even though Cincinnati is a great team and could pull off the shock. Although Cincinnati’s frontline is among the best in the Big 12 when its guards are healthy and competent, I’m not as impressed by their defense as I am by other Big 12 teams. The following players were a major factor in BYU’s struggles in their three most intense games this year: 1) Guards that can put you under strain and make you give up.

UC failed miserably in this regard; in my opinion, this was one area where NC State and SDSU excelled. 2) A talented big guy who can split time between the paint and the perimeter, as well as play high-low alongside another big. This was a problem for Utah’s front line and Branden Carlson, but Cincinnati lacks a big man with Carlson’s skill set on the perimeter.

The battle should be tight, with UC getting their share of paint points and boards. However, I worry that BYU will be able to exploit UC’s defensive vulnerabilities while facing their two bigs since the Cougars lack the guards to match the athleticism of other league teams. With Fouss’s 10-15 minutes, BYU shouldn’t be able to be intimidated by UC’s massive frontline and should have more opportunities to capitalize than UC. Despite UC’s struggles in their last two away games, the Marriott Centre is sure to be rocking for this one.

The score will be BYU84, Cincinnati 72.
