WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a significant shake-up of his new term, U.S. President Donald Trump has officially removed National Security Advisor Mike Waltz following a major communications blunder that’s now being dubbed “Signalgate.”

Trump confirmed the move on Thursday through his Truth Social account, announcing that Waltz would instead be nominated as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

“Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first,” Trump wrote. “I know he will do the same in his new role.”

Taking over the role—at least for now—is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who will serve as interim national security advisor, according to the announcement.

While Trump didn’t give a direct reason for the change, the pressure had been mounting on Waltz ever since a major blunder in late March. In what’s now being called the Signalgate scandal, Waltz reportedly added the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic magazine to a private Signal group chat. The chat included sensitive details about U.S. airstrikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebels, including exact timings of takeoffs and targets—shared just minutes before the mission began.

The accidental leak triggered outrage and concern over the security of U.S. military operations. While Trump initially stood by Waltz, the damage appeared too significant to overlook. After just over 100 days in office during Trump’s second term, Waltz is now on his way out of the West Wing—and possibly on his way to the United Nations.

Meanwhile, Democrats are turning their attention to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who reportedly also leaked classified information in a separate Signal group that included, among others, his spouse. Calls for further investigation are expected to grow louder in the coming days.
